Southern Connecticut is about to witness a fierce competition between two discount airlines, Breeze Airways and Avelo. With Breeze recently announcing its plans to introduce 10 routes from Tweed Airport in New Haven, the battleground has been set. This move puts Breeze in direct competition with Avelo, the only commercial airline currently operating out of Tweed Airport.

Breeze’s offerings in New Haven will heavily focus on Florida destinations, with flights to Fort Myers, Orlando, West Palm Beach, Vero Beach, Jacksonville, and Sarasota set to launch in December and February. In addition to these Florida routes, Breeze will also be offering flights to Charleston, S.C.; Norfolk, Va.; Richmond, Va.; and Raleigh-Durham, N.C. This expansion signifies Breeze’s commitment to providing affordable and convenient air travel options to residents in the Northeast region of the U.S.

With the introduction of these new routes, Breeze will be directly competing with Avelo on six out of the 10 routes from New Haven. Avelo, on the other hand, has recently announced plans to start service from Bradley Airport near Hartford, a key location for Breeze. Avelo is also venturing into international destinations, with flights to Cancun and Montego Bay starting in November. Both airlines are relatively new to the market, having launched their operations in the spring of 2021.

One of the key differences between Breeze and Avelo lies in their fleet composition. While Avelo operates older Boeing 737NG aircraft, Breeze is focused on using new Airbus A220 small mainline jets. This difference in fleet choice reflects each airline’s unique approach to providing leisure flying options to their passengers. Breeze’s emphasis on newer aircraft indicates a commitment to modernizing their fleet and enhancing the overall flying experience.

As the battle for Southern Connecticut’s skies heats up, passengers can look forward to more choices and competitive fares from both Breeze Airways and Avelo. With a focus on expanding routes and offering affordable leisure flying options, these two discount airlines are poised to transform the air travel landscape in the region. Only time will tell which airline will emerge victorious in this high-stakes competition for the hearts and wallets of travelers in Southern Connecticut.
