Portland International Airport has recently unveiled the first phase of its new main terminal, with a total cost of $2.15 billion. This modern terminal boasts upgraded check-in areas, wider TSA security screening spaces equipped with state-of-the-art technology, and expanded public areas. Notably, the pre-security section now features stadium seating, providing travelers with a comfortable environment as they await their flights.
The design of the new terminal at Portland Airport pays homage to the Pacific Northwest region by incorporating locally sourced materials and sustainable features. The terminal’s striking timber roof, procured from nearby wood producers, is adorned with 49 skylights. These skylights not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the terminal but also allow natural light to filter through, illuminating the space and nurturing over 5,000 living plants, including majestic trees.
Sharron van der Meulen, a managing partner at ZGF architectural firm, emphasized that the terminal was meticulously crafted to minimize the stress associated with air travel. Upon entering the terminal, passengers are greeted with panoramic views of the airfield, abundant natural light, and verdant interior landscapes that evoke a sense of wonder and tranquility reminiscent of a stroll through a Pacific Northwest forest.
The initial phase of the million-square-foot Portland terminal was inaugurated in 2021, encompassing 600,000 square feet of the structure. However, the project is far from complete, with the final phase scheduled for an early 2026 debut. This concluding phase will introduce 10 additional restaurants and stores, new airline lounges, waiting areas for incoming travelers, as well as updated escalators, elevators, and restrooms, enhancing the overall passenger experience.
In addition to the terminal’s transformation, Portland Airport has undertaken other significant developments in recent years. These include the expansion of Concourse E, the inauguration of a new Concourse B, and the establishment of a rental car center, all aimed at modernizing and improving the airport’s facilities to meet the evolving needs of travelers.
